We are taking a little rest after a successful Ginza celebration. Our services will resume on Sunday September 12, 2010. Have a great summer.
The 2010 Eastern Buddhist League (EBL) conference will be hosted by the Midwest Buddhist Temple over Labor Day weekend (September 3-5) at the Westin Chicago River North hotel. This year's conference theme is "Strengthening Connections: Learning through Tradition, Community and Religion."
On Sunday, September 5, 2010, the public is welcome to join us for these FREE EBL events at the Midwest Buddhist Temple. We have all connected with Buddhism through traditions, community, and religion. This year's EBL conference will focus on strengthening those connections as we learn from our rich histories and strive towards a successful future.
As interest in Buddhism and our temples continues to grow, it also gives us an opportunity to network and learn from each other. Through a series of discussions, workshops and activities, we will uncover new ways to strengthen our communities and reflect on our own identities.
For more information, please visit the event website (http://www.ebl2010chicago.org).
Our speaker is a practicing Taoist and a practicing physicist. In his book, the Dynamic Tao, he states that what we believe about our physical world must be harmonious with our spiritual practices.
Dr Wayne Wang has lectured widely on this interesting topic of the relationship between the ancient verses of the Tao Te Ching and modern physics. Only now is science “catching up” with what LaoTzu’s classic text revealed so long ago.
Dr Wang will give two sessions during the program: an introduction and theory and then a discussion of the verses themselves. The rest of the program will include a yoga class, suitable for all levels, meditation, Chi energy class and a Thai vegetarian lunch. These are all included in the fee.
Program ScheduleAdditional information. Tao Te Ching

Ho Etsu Taiko is a Japanese drum ensemble based at Chicago’s Midwest Buddhist Temple. As we continue to build upon our unique Taiko foundation stemming from both Japanese and American influences, our group aspires to bring a youthful and energizing sound to the stage.
One of our core philosophies focuses on the collective enjoyment of this wonderful cultural art, giving us our name, Ho Etsu or Joy of Dharma. Recent performances include the “Taiko 10” concert series at the 2009 Taiko Conference in Los Angeles as well as the annual installments of JASC Tsukasa Taiko’s “Taiko Legacy” at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago and the Chicago Cultural Center.
Our program has produced many talented players who have gone on to further develop their passion for Taiko with groups across the country including Gendo Taiko at Brown University, Cal Taiko at UC Berkeley, St. Louis Osuwa Taiko, and Tsunami Taiko of Seattle. Our membership is open to both seasoned and inexperienced players and interested parties are always welcome to observe our practices.
Membership: Those interested in Taiko are welcome to attend or observe a trial practice. Please contact info@hoetsu.com.

Shoshinge "The Hymn of True Faith"
"A crucial component of the Buddhist faith is chanting. The practice of chanting is much akin to the Christian hymns. Much like the past practice of the Catholic churches tradition of chanting in Latin, one does not need to know Japanese in order to be absorbed by the melodic rhythm of foreign sounds. This podcast is a recording of Shoshinge, one of the many Jodo Shinshu chants. Here's some background on this important chant..."
